With SureMDM, time-fencing for both BYOD and corporate-owned devices becomes accessible to all SureMDM users. Time Fencing entails establishing periodic boundaries for mobile devices to adhere to specific behavior or functionality guidelines. This feature ensures a controlled and organized mobile device usage environment.
Admins can configure policies on the devices by assigning jobs to execute when the device enters or exits this periodical fence.
Purpose
The purpose of the article is to provide a guide on how to create a time-fence job and push it to the enrolled device(s) remotely.
Prerequisites
- The Time Fence functionality operates specifically on designated days, while the Date Fence feature provides the flexibility to choose an extensive range of dates along with specific times for the execution of time fence jobs.
- To use the Date Fence feature, the device must be running SureMDM Agent v26.00.96 or later.
Steps
1. Login to the SureMDM Console.
2. On SureMDM Home, navigate to Jobs and click on New Job.
3. On the Select Operating System screen, click Android or iOS.
4. On the Select Job Type screen, select Time Fence.
5. On the Time Fence prompt, select Enable Time Fencing and fill out the following details:
- Console time: Select this option to create a fence based on the SureMDM Console’s time.
- Device time: Select this option to create a fence based on the user’s device time.
- Select Fence: Select the Start Time, End Time, and Days of the Week.
- Entering the Fence: Select Fence Entered tab, click Add to select the job(s) that will be activated on the device when it enters the periodical fence at the specified start time, and also specify if an alert has to be sent to the Device, MDM, or Email.
NOTE: In the Select Jobs to Add screen, select the multiple jobs from the list using Ctrl key.
- Exiting the Fence: Select the Fence Exited tab, click Add to select the job(s) that will be activated on the device when it exits the periodical fence at the specified end time, and also specify if an alert has to be sent to the Device, MDM, or Email.
NOTE: SureMDM supports the creation of multiple fences, each with its own unique time criteria and associated actions. This flexibility enables administrators to implement different configurations during various time periods, accommodating diverse use cases or operational requirements. Click Add Fence to add multiple fences.
6. In the Job Details window, enter a Job Name.
The newly created job will be listed in the Jobs List section.
7. Go back to the Home tab and select the Android/iOS device(s) or group(s) and click Apply to launch the Apply Job/Profile To Device prompt.
8. In the Apply Job/Profile To Device prompt, select the job and click Apply.
Let’s consider an example scenario using SureMDM’s Time Fence job for initiating app installation at a specific time.
- When the user creates a Fence Entered job and selects the Install App action, sets the criteria to start every weekday at 9:00 AM, enrolled Android devices within the specified time frame will automatically initiate the installation of the designated productivity app.
- Similarly, if the user selects the Uninstall Job in the Fence Exit job daily at 6:00 PM, enrolled devices within the specified time will automatically trigger the uninstallation of the designated app.
The admins can select from the following options to receive an alert when the device enters the periodic fence:
- Device: Alerts go directly to the device user’s mailbox, ensuring users receive specific notifications, keeping them informed and engaged with operational changes.
- MDM: Alternatively, you can designate the SureMDM admin as the recipient of alerts. This ensures that notifications are directed to the centralized Inbox section within SureMDM
- Email: You can choose an external email recipient for additional communication outside of the SureMDM platform. Alerts will be sent to the configured email addresses.
Time fencing in SureMDM simplifies mobile device management for enterprises, addressing efficiency, security, and productivity challenges. This automated setup is particularly valuable for businesses with strict scheduling requirements, ensuring tasks are executed on time.
