How to create a Wi-Fi profile for iOS/ipadOS using Apple Configurator

Introduction:

In modern IT environments, managing iOS and iPadOS devices efficiently is crucial for maintaining security and operational efficiency. Using Apple Configurator to create and apply Wi-Fi profiles simplifies network management by automating connectivity and ensuring consistent security settings across devices. This approach helps SureMDM Admin to streamline device deployment, minimize configuration errors, and ensure compliance with organizational policies.

Purpose:

The purpose of this document is to provide step-by-step instructions for creating and configuring Wi-Fi profiles via Apple Configurator.

Prerequisites:

  • Apple Configurator: Ensure Apple Configurator is installed on your macOS system.
  • iOS/iPadOS Device: A compatible iOS or iPadOS device must be connected to your Mac.

Steps:

  1. Open Apple Configurator on the MacOS and Connect Your iOS/iPadOS Device using a USB cable to your Mac, the device should appear in the Apple Configurator window.
  2. Go to the File menu in the top menu bar.
  3. Click on New Profile to begin creating a new configuration profile.
  4. Enter a desired name for the profile, Organization Name, and Consent message
  5. Configure the Security Settings for the profile that will Allow or prevent the user from removing the profile from the device. Below are the Security Types:
    • Always: Allows users to remove the profile without any authentication. This is the least restrictive option.
    • With Authentication: Requires users to enter a password set by the Admin to remove the profile. This provides moderate security.

Note: It is recommended to select With Authentication for most scenarios. Enter a strong password in the provided block to ensure that only authorized users can remove the profile.

6. Select the configuration to Automatically Remove the Profile:

  • Never: The profile remains on the device until manually removed.
  • On Date: The profile will be automatically removed from the device on a specified date.
Choose this option from the drop-down menu and specify the removal date using the format DD/MM/YYYY.
  • After Interval: The profile will be removed after a set period. Specify the duration in days and hours for automatic removal.

7. Navigate to the Wi-Fi section and click on Configure to set up Wi-Fi parameters.

  • Enter the valid SSID of the Wi-Fi network
  • Configure the Wi-Fi settings to Auto Join.
  • Configure security type as WPA2 Personal or WPA3 for secured protection.
  • After selecting the Security type, enter the correct password for the SSID provided.
  • Select the Network Type as Standard.
