In enterprise environments, managing application installations on enrolled devices is a critical responsibility for IT administrators to ensure security and compliance. By default, Android blocks the installation of apps from unknown sources to safeguard devices against potential threats. However, in certain cases, it may be necessary to allow the “Install Unknown Apps” permission for a specific, trusted application to support business needs or internal deployment. SureMDM has now introduced a feature that can be remotely configured.
Purpose
The purpose of this article is to remotely enable the “Install Unknown Apps” permission for a specific application on Android devices using SureMDM, allowing IT administrators to streamline internal app deployments while maintaining full control and compliance across managed devices.
Prerequisite
- Devices should be enrolled as Device Owner/Fully Managed.
- If a Non Knox device, then the appropriate OEM Agent/Enterprise Agent should be installed on the device.
- The application for which the permission has to be granted should be installed on the device.
- Supported by the SureMDM agent v27.51.00.
Steps:
- Login to SureMDM Console
- Navigate to Jobs > New Jobs > Android > Application Permission > Choose the application from the list > Special App Access > Configure Install Unknown Apps to be as “Grant”.
- Once the above configurations are made, save the job.
Deploy the job to the devices.
