How to troubleshoot the ‘Device ID already exists’ error while re-enrolling the device to SureMDM

Sometimes due to the need of an hour, the admin will need to reset and re-enroll the devices to SureMDM. While doing this there are chances that the devices are not properly removed from the SureMDM web console to be re-enrolled. And hence, while re-enrolling them, the admin might encounter an error that shows up in the log file as Device Name registration failed. Reason: Device ID already exists.

And on the device side, we see the status as indicated in the below screenshot.

Purpose

The purpose of this knowledge article is to provide a guide on how to troubleshoot the ‘Device ID already exists’ error while re-enrolling the device to SureMDM.

Prerequisites

NA

Steps

1. Check if the device is available in the Recycle Bin section of the SureMDM console. If the device is present in the section, select the device and click on the Force Delete option.

2. Gather the Device ID of the device and search for the same in the SureMDM console. If the device is found in the SureMDM web console, then select the device and delete it from the console. Once done, re-configure the device and re-enroll it.

Step 1 : To find out the Device ID of the device.

  • Launch SureMDM Agent on the device and click on Settings.
  • Uncheck the “Enable SureMDM Agent Service” option and note down the Device ID displayed under the Device ID option.

3. The last pointer to take care of is to clear the Device ID on the SureMDM Agent of the device. SureMDM recognizes a device from the Device ID it allows for the device. Clearing Device ID and re-enrolling it to SureMDM will generate a new Device ID for the device.

Step 2 : To clear the Device ID on the device.

  • Launch SureMDM Agent on the device and click on Settings.
  • Uncheck the “Enable SureMDM Agent Service” option and navigate to the Device ID option.
  • Tap on it to clear it.

The device should enroll successfully now.
